“TRAVELERS IN THE MIDDLE AGES” This is the new theme of the 2025 animations of the castle of Saint Mesmin. People traveled during the Middle Ages in Europe and beyond, to trade, pray, conquer, but not yet for leisure! All the reasons are very real, whether political, diplomatic, commercial, military, religious or purely artistic. Understanding the world in the Middle Ages is already a prerequisite for travel thanks to the theoretical knowledge of scholars (nautical charts or portolans) and the stories left by travelers. Understanding travel also means submitting to the risks of the dangers encountered (climate, attacks, illnesses, etc.) The perception of the world and therefore implicitly of the journey is somewhat different depending on one's rank. Whether we are pilgrims, knights, ambassadors, merchants, messengers, troubadours, artists, students, astronomers, all travel in search, above all, of a real need for personal development. On foot, most of the time, on horseback for the wealthiest, by cart or by boat for the longest distances, it is above all a real material journey (equipment, clothing, goods, relics, precious objects, artistic works, ) and intangible (poems, songs, music, salvation of the soul and social visibility). Journey through games With “Travelers in the Middle Ages”, we open a lovely travel diary by navigating through time. “You never go as far as when you don't know where you are going” so, taking maps and a compass, go to the castle of Saint Mesmin from April 13 to April 27, 2025 to travel through the games. Come on children, at the castle! With “Travelers in the Middle Ages” a lovely travel diary navigating through time opens. “We never go as far as when we don't know where we are going” so, taking maps and a compass, meet from Thursday May 29 to Sunday June 1, 2025 at the castle of Saint Mesmin for the big annual event “To the castle, Children!” » 4 days to discover around the theme “Oriental Journey”, with the Armutan company, Dame Melissande and the Nanous. To take children on a journey to the Eastern Middle Ages, meet with the Armutan Company to discover choreographed fights, Mamluk arts tournaments, canopies reserved for toddlers, oriental tents presenting games from the Arab world, the spices of Sidi Tariq, the spice merchant, all in the form of an Arab-Andalusian and oriental camp. It’s a guaranteed invitation to travel! Lady Mélissande la Trobaïritz will complete this oriental decor. She traveled a lot and brought back from these distant lands an immense knowledge which she will share with the public in musical and dance form without forgetting the presentation of many instruments (percussion, strings, aerophones, etc.). Coming to offer her services as a troubadour to the lord of the castle who offers her, in exchange, room and board, she will entertain the curious with her most beautiful notes played or sung or even danced. The Nanous will offer donkey rides. The donkey played an important role during travel in the Middle Ages: transport of goods, pet for pilgrims. He will stop at the castle to transport the youngest ones for a ride in a cart or on the back of a donkey... like real budding travelers! Available at reception: The castle’s game “In Quest of the Philosopher’s Stone” is to be shared with family or friends. A fun moment of one hour of play to explore the castle while playing. Outside, wooden games installed in the large farmyard, will also offer other moments of sharing such as stilting, bowling, mini crossbow stand. Indoors, thanks to the game of the Intrepid club, with Noé, Filou, Emma and Léo it will be a question of going in search of the lost coats of arms. Once these coats of arms are found, they will form a code allowing, perhaps, to open the treasure chest of Pierre de Montfaucon, lord of the place. Travelers in the middle ages, the Playmobil® way Meet at the Château de Saint Mesmin every day between October 19 and November 2, 2025 because we will travel to the Middle Ages in Europe and beyond, Playmobil® style: It is in the form of dioramas that the fortress will, once again, and for the pleasure of all, be filled with these revisited legendary Playmobil® figurines. Discover, then, travel as it was perceived by the men and women of the Middle Ages: From the means of locomotion (boat, cart, on foot, on horseback) to the travelers themselves (pilgrims, merchants, soldiers, ambassadors, students, artists, troubadours etc ;..). The dioramas will be full of small sketches evoking the daily life of travelers from another time. It’s a real journey through history and a return to childhood memories, Playmobil® style. Saint Nicholas An ancestor of Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas is, in many European countries, the object of cults and folklore. By miracle, Saint Nicholas will appear at the castle may be accompanied by his donkey.
